WWU Board of Trustees Resolutions on Naming

At its December 9, 2021 regular meeting the Western Washington University Board of Trustees made decisions regarding the recommendations of the Legacy Review Task Force. In the Report and Recommendations submitted in June 2021, the Task Force suggested that the President and the Board of Trustees consider removing the names from four named features of campus: Huxley College of the Environment, Mathes Hall, Haggard Hall, and the Viking Union.

Based upon a comprehensive assessment of the Task Force report, research, resources, and input gathered throughout the process, including responses to the report, and additional documentation created by an Ad Hoc committee of the Board, the Board of Trustees passed three separate resolutions on December 9, 2021, to remove the Huxley name from the College of the Environment and to retain the names on Haggard Hall and Mathes Hall, respectively.  The Board directed the University to conduct a more thorough review of the Viking name in the broader context of the University mascot.
