Mourning Losses After a Week of Tragedies
Published On
Dear Western Community,
As the nation anticipates the release of body cam footage this evening revealing the senseless murder of Tyre Nichols at the hands of law enforcement, many of us will be processing our grief and anger over the death of another young Black man. We are also in mourning for the loss of members of our Asian-American communities in California.
The utter disregard for basic human life is at odds with our commitment to create a society where equity, justice, and respect for the dignity of all is cherished and upheld. We recognize that our communities are hurting and acknowledge our responsibility for caring for each other as we process how we share this space.
To facilitate healing, the Counseling & Wellness Center will hold a community care space on Monday at noon with the Black Student Coalition in VU 504. Additional information about other events honoring the lives of those we have lost in the Black and Asian communities will be shared later. We encourage you to seek out support from your community and lean on the people around you.
Sincerely,
Sabah Randhawa, President
