Celebrating Black History Month

Dear WWU Community, 

February is Black History Month, an important time to honor the remarkable achievements and contributions of Black people in our communities and around the world. It is also a time to recognize the significant role Black communities continue to play in advancing the struggle for racial justice and equality.

This year’s theme is Back to B.L.A.C.K:  A Legacy of Art. I encourage you to join me in reflecting on, and celebrating, the rich history and legacy of Black Americans and honoring the exceptional efforts of our Black students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  A full month of activities kicks off tonight as the WWU Music Department proudly presents A Celebration of Black Music. This annual concert celebrates the music and contributions of Black classical and jazz musicians featuring the University Choir, Western Flute Ensemble, Piano and Flute Faculty duet, Faculty Piano Solo, WWU Jazz Big Band and Combos.

As a university, we remain committed to supporting Black success and well-being across our campuses and beyond. Each day presents a chance to do better in fostering a culture of inclusiveness and belonging at Western and throughout our communities.

As we look toward the future, I encourage you to engage in your own reflective journey on how we can all work together to build a community that is more inclusive, equitable and free of racial prejudice. I also hope you will find time to join the many Black History Month activities, events, and lectures. Thank you to everyone who developed and organized these Black History Month initiatives on our campuses and in our communities. Our shared commitment to racial justice and creating a true sense of belonging for all gives me great hope for the future.
