Sharing sad news

Dear Western Community,

It is with a terribly heavy heart that I write to you all today. Last night, we learned of the death of a student after an apparent fall from Nash Hall, and earlier this morning, we were informed of a second student death in Alma Clark Glass Hall. As law enforcement personnel and medical examiners conduct their work, it does not appear that these incidents are connected, and we will keep the campus community updated as we learn more.

No words can capture our shock and sadness at these two heartbreaking events, and our thoughts are with the loved ones of our students as their lives are forever changed by their losses. The students’ families have been notified and will be receiving ongoing support from the university and from emergency personnel. The university will not at this time share their private details or other information concerning their passing unless with the express permission of their families and only after law enforcement and medical examiners have completed their work. I know that you will all respect that this is a deeply sensitive and private matter for the students’ families and friends.

As our community navigates this painful moment, let us remember that it is in times like these that we must lean on each other, mourn together, and not let anyone who may be suffering do so alone. Together, we can find solace and strength in one another, ensuring that our students are remembered not just for their loss, but for the joy they brought into our lives. I encourage everyone to reach out—whether it’s to a friend, a faculty member, a colleague, or a counselor—if you are feeling the weight of this loss. Our counseling services are available to all students, and the Employee Assistance Program is available to all faculty and staff. I urge you to take advantage of the resources we have in place to support your mental and emotional well-being.

Over the next days and weeks, our counselors and Student Affairs professionals will be providing campus-wide support for students and community members who are struggling. We will be reaching out to those campus community members who were close with these students, with Resident Advisors, and academic personnel.

The WWU Counseling and Wellness Center will provide assistance to any student impacted by this incident. Students may contact the office at 360-650-3164 for support. Employees may access the Employee Assistance Program, 877-313-4455. Both numbers are available 24 hours a day.

Please take care of yourselves and each other as we navigate this difficult time together with understanding and compassion.

 With warm regards and support,

 Sabah
