Provide feedback to the Legacy Review Task Force

The work of the Legacy Review Task Force is being guided by a two-part charge to review the names associated with Western’s named buildings and colleges, and to make a recommendation to the President by May 31, 2021 as to whether particular names warrant consideration for removal.  The Task Force is not charged with considering new names for buildings or colleges.  The final decision regarding building names rests with the Western Board of Trustees.

The Task Force invites you to contribute your thoughts to the process through two mechanisms: an upcoming online forum at the Huxley College Speaker Series on April 29, and the online feedback form below, which will be open until May 21, 2021.

Online Forum

The Legacy Review Task Force will be hosting a forum at the Huxley College Speaker Series from 4:30 – 5:20 pm on April 29, 2021 at 4:30.  The session will include an overview of the process and the Task Force’s role in it, as well a discussion of the materials and research being taken into account (available on the Research and Resources page).  Time will also be set aside for audience questions about the process.

The Legacy Review Task Force welcomes feedback from the community

The Legacy Review Task Force will review all responses received by May 21, 2021.

What are your views on when it might be appropriate to remove the names of historical individuals from Western’s named buildings or colleges? (Some examples of factors for considering the removal of a name are included in the Task Force charge).
What are your thoughts on the distinction between removing a name or contextualizing a namesake and their behavior with historical explanation and context?  When do you think it would be appropriate for the University to add contextualization about a namesake’s life and works?
The first part of the charge to the Legacy Review Task Force is to review a report prepared by Western Libraries Heritage Resources on the history and significance of building names.  In looking at the report and considering when it may be appropriate to remove a name, what thoughts would you like to share with the Task Force regarding the names of the buildings in the report?
The second part of the charge to the Legacy Review Task Force is to review the names associated with named colleges, with the name of Huxley College being of particular interest to some students and faculty.  A report was prepared by Western Libraries Heritage Resources on the naming of Huxley College, and resources on T.H. Huxley have been collected here.  In looking at these materials, and considering when it may be appropriate to remove a name, what thoughts would you like to share with the Task Force regarding the named colleges, and in particular Huxley College?
